| This is the story behind our dog Griffey. He is the inspiration behind Griffey's House. We hope that this story inspires you as Griffey inspired us. |
| Griffey was born September 19, 2001 in Sequin, Texas. We’d been looking for the perfect Mastiff, we truly see the pups we could pick from (I’d been hounding the owners for about 3 months over the phone to have one). #3 and all his brothers and sisters were just adorable, but I can truly say #3, who became Griffey, picked us. He refused to stay in the play area and would follow us every step while we were trying to choose. It took us 2 hours to make sure, but of course Griffey was right –he was meant to be ours. On the way home somehow he grabbed our hearts and has never let go. Griffey loved everyone he met. He was extremely social. My sons would have friends over and Griffey would play pool basketball-everyone wanted Griffey on their team because he always could shoot from the pool bank and make the shot. He also loved to go every evening for his 7pm car rides for chicken strips. About 6:55 he’d start looking at the clock on the fireplace and crying, then hitting you with that huge paw! Call it spoiled yes, but it was with such love that he reminded in case we might forget. He loved to stick his head out the window and so we had to buy an XXL man’s hooded sweatshirt for him to wear on his car rides. On pretty days we’d take him to the dog park and he’d hang out with his friends- just being Griffey. He was always a good boy and always stayed near us. Looking back I’m sure in his mind he was walking us. One of his favorite games was hide & seek and every night Jim would play with him by hiding then whistling…and of course Griffey always found Jim, but we’d cheer and clap every time like he had done the best thing in the whole world. Griffey loved to make people happy. We lost Griffey unexpectedly to cancer on Easter morning in 2008. His whole life seems like yesterday. This amazing animal taught us so much and we still cry often because of our loss. We knew in our hearts Griffey wouldn’t always be there in body, but I can tell you for sure…he will live in our hearts and memories forever. We have Griffey’s half sister Maris who is getting older too. Griffey also loved her very much. When we brought Maris home he cried because he stepped on her foot and he thought he had hurt her. It so hurts to lose a part of your family, but as my son told me “Griffey was going to be someone’s. He blessed your lives and you were lucky he chose you. You gave him the best life a dog could have.” He certainly gave us more love than we could ever have imagined. We know everyday was a gift with Griffey. This is why Griffey’s House was created –to honor Griffey’s life and so he can live on through every life saved and given a second chance for a forever home. We hope either Griffey or a dog you have loved will touch your heart. Please help us to provide a second chance to save a life that we know will forever live in your hearts like Griffey will live in ours. |
